My Children’s Book Inspirations

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Every writer has a favorite writer (or five), who inspired them to write their own story.

With the debut of my new book, Mr. Noet, I want to take some time to reflect on my biggest inspirations.

Below is my top three children's book authors of all time, and the books that I loved most. Let me know what you think.

  1. Dr. Seuss

I see no shame in putting Dr. Seuss as my number one. His ability to make memorable characters is above any and a huge inspiration to my own writing. The Grinch, the Lorax, Horton, Thing 1 and Thing 2, these characters aren't just my favorites of his, but some of my favorites of all time. His creativity in creating words and unique illustrations is something I haven't seen another author recreate, and so I stand by Dr. Seuss being number 1 and I would certainly argue him to be the greatest children's book author of all time.

I’ve read this book more times than I can count and I recommend it to anyone who is unfamiliar. Although this book doesn't feature any of Seuss's most famous characters, it's full of some of his best stories. They're funny and yet full of meaningful lessons.

2. Bill Peet

Growing up I always made sure I grabbed at least one Bill Pete when I was bringing my parents the books they would read me. His books never failed to make me laugh, even to this day. I would say my favorite part of Pete's work is his illustrations. He creates such a personaility in every face and character he creates, and it's expressed in his writing. Again, I would say Pete's characters really made his stories beautiful. It's certainly going to be a challenge to pick my favorite when there are so many.

I love this book.

This is a great story about a very misunderstood dragon who just wants to fit in. I would say I picked this book because Droofus was probably my favorite character of Petes. It was tough call between him, Bruce, and the Caboose. I think in the end what makes this story my favorite is the hilarious ending.

3. Chris Van Allsburg

I couldn’t create this list without Chris Van Allsburg. Although his style is very different than mine, as I feel my style better compares to my previous two choices, I can’t emphasize how important his stories were to me growing up. His ability to create so much in such a short amount of words and pages should inspire any writer. As you consider the major motion pictures his books have become it's evident of what he was able to create with the limited space he had. Again, although I don’t illustrate or write very similarly to him, I strive to make stories that go beyond what is displayed in the book.

The Polar Express is a classic. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is timeless. This is one I read every Christmas.
