The story behind my inspiration for writing my Children's Book, titled, Mr. Noet, (pictured below):
A Lifelong Love for Writing
For as long as I can remember I have been writing. Just the other day I found an old notebook with a story I wrote of a monkey and a squirrel racing through the jungle. I must have been so young when I wrote this. Even the word "the" was spelled wrong (not to mention my attempt at spelling "squirrel.") Since then I have always had a story running. As I began to read chapter books, I started to want to write chapter books. My dream was to write a novel.
Only recently did I realize that I wasn't tapping into another love of mine. My love for art. Why not combine these passions, and what better way than to write a children's book? From here is was obvious, and what I did next was return to my childhood home and search my old bookshelf for my favorite picture books. These inspirations (which you can read more about in a previous post), helped guide me. From here, I began to brainstorm what my first story would be about.
Why Mr. Noet?
To understand why I wrote Mr. Noet you have to first understand a little about myself. When I first started this story I was a substitute teacher in an elementary school. Through this experience I quickly discovered that content wasn't actually the most important part of school. The best teachers weren't the one's who knew the most about Math or Science or Physics, they were the one's who knew the most about their students.
Where school is often so focused on content, I feel like kids start to feel like they are second. They begin to feel like what is important to them, doesn't matter, and consequently, they don't matter. I came up with Mr. Noet to remind kids that they do matter. What they find important, is important, and can come first.
Although Mr. Noet takes place in a school, it is a message for everyone. We get so caught up in the everyday noise with our jobs or responsibilities, we forget what really matters -- each other. Mr. Noet reminds us that we need to care about one another and get to know what makes each and every one of us important, because we are important.
Mr. Noet knows this, and he knows everything.
Conclusion
I am very happy with how my book turned out, and I hope its message can reach as many kids out there as possible. If you would like to read my book, it is currently available on Amazon in paperback or as an ebook. Please let me know what you think by leaving a review or commenting to this post.
